Elon Musk & Neuralink Creates Chip To Combat Cognitive Diseases

Neuralink, a neurotechnology company owned by Elon Musk, has recently unveiled cognitive prosthetics that have the near term goal of treating diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's, and the long term goal of creating a link between human and artificial intelligence.

Musk co-founded Neuralink in 2016 with the long term goal of enabling brain-computer interface. With this in mind researchers began the process of creating a prosthetic that could be implanted in the brain. This helped them realize that during the journey they could help those who have diseases that directly affect our cognitive abilities. The idea behind this is to use the prosthetic to mend the areas of the brain that are damaged by diseases such as Parkinson’s, Dementia, and Alzheimer’s.

The chip would be implanted behind the ear and would first combat the diseases using electrodes. Later in the future, they would have the ability to link the human brain to artificial intelligence and allow humans to interact with technology without the use of hands.

Musk and his team made a surprise announcement about the technology and even commented on how they have successfully tested the chips on monkeys and that they are starting to test on humans. They hope that the technology will be available to people both with and without cognitive disabilities within the next 8-10 years.
